Does food regularly get stuck at a particular spot between your teeth? This is a common issue experienced by many patients! Besides annoyance, food trap can also lead to gum inflammation, bone loss, pain, tooth decay or cavities, and bad breath.
The following patient has a constant food trap between her 2 upper molar teeth. One of her molar is rotated and the 2 teeth are not as tight as how we would like them to be. When a small gap exist between the 2 teeth, food will regularly get stuck at that particular spot.
In this case, tooth decay or cavity was noted at the rotated molar; a direct result from having food stuck at that spot constantly. SInce the tooth needs a restoration/filling, we took this opportunity to reshape her rotated molar as well. In doing so, the contact area between the 2 teeth are tight together and there will not be any more food trap!
.
The patient was really happy with the result! We followed up with her a week after the filling/restoration was done, and she said she didn't have anymore food trap at that area ever since!
If we had done a simple fillling/restoration, and shape the filling/restoration exactly the way the molar was before, the patient would definitely have decay/cavity again at the same spot because she would still have the food trap problem!
