What Is Teeth Whitening And How Does It Work?
Teeth become darker and more yellow with age and with accumlation of surface stains. Stains on your teeth can be extrinsic and/or intrinsic. Extrinsic stains appear on the outer surface of your teeth and they may be able to be removed with whitening toothpastes and dental cleanings. On the other hand, intrinsic stains are deep between the microcracks of your teeth and they cannot be removed without the aid of active whitening agents such as carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide.
Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that uses these active whitening agents on your teeth to give you whiter and brighter smiles. Once the whitening agents are applied to your teeth, they will break down into water, oxygen, and free radicals, which in turn oxidizes/breaks the bonding that holds the discolored molecules together. As a result, you are left with a whiter smile!
Frequently Asked Questions
You Ask — We Answer
What is the difference between in-office and take-home teeth whitening?
They both work and will give you a whiter smile!
In-office whitening uses a stronger whitening gel that requires supervision of a dental professional. The procedure is approximately an hour long and you will see the result immediately. This option is more expensive.
Take-home whitening uses a relatively weaker whitening gel. You will need to wear the tray (that contains the whitening gel) for 30 minutues a day and It will usually take few days to 1 week to get the result you desire.
How long does whitening last?
The whitening result is quite stable long after the treatment is over; however if you want to prolong the result, it is recommend to have "touch ups" with take-home whitening every few months. These regular maintenance sessions at home are especially useful for patients with a diet that stains teeth (e.g. coffee, tea, red wine, blueberries, tomato sauce etc) or if you are a smoker.
What are the risks of having teeth whitening?
Some patients may experience teeth sensitivity or gum irritation after the treatment, but these symptoms are only temporary and will usually disappear within few days after the treatment is finished.
